Haunted Houses is a guide to reportedly haunted houses, mansions and historic homes across the United States, including some that are now museums, inns or restaurants and some that no longer stand. It collects house ghost stories and legends, with the place, what is said to happen there and, where it is known, the documented history of the house and the people who lived there.
How the stories are written
Documented history is kept separate from legend. Each entry covers where the house actually is, what the record says happened there, and what residents and visitors are said to see or hear. The ghost stories are told as local folklore, not as proven fact. Where no record backs a story up, it is described as a legend or a rumor, and many of these tales have changed over the years. Many of these houses are private homes or businesses, so please enjoy the stories from a distance or on an official tour: visit house museums, inns and restaurants during their opening hours, respect the privacy of anyone who lives there, and never trespass on private property or approach a house that is not open to visitors.
